Fundraiser for the ‘Friends of Shadow’ Fund The Stevens-Swan Humane Society Auxiliary is helping to raise money for the ‘Friends of Shadow’ fund to help pay Vet bills, possible legal fees and to erect a plaque and memorial tree in Shadow’s name at the Trenton Greenbelt Park area. Shadow was a German shepherd dog adopted from the Stevens-Swan Humane Society by Bernard Sperfeld of Utica. During a visit to the Trenton Greenbelt Park, Shadow was shot and subsequently died. A State Police investigation continues and was handled by a Special Prosecutor at a Grand Jury in Oneida County on October 12th. A report concerning the offer from the Special Prosecutor was held on Monday November 7th. The case goes to trial on Dec. 7th. See WKTV coverage here. Mr. Sperfeld has since adopted another dog- Heidi from the Stevens-Swan Humane Society. The Stevens-Swan Auxiliary is now helping to raise funds for the Friends of Shadow fund. Donations are also being accepted by mail. Checks can be made out to ‘Friends of Shadow’ and mailed to 10282 Hinman Rd., Holland Patent, NY 13354. We deal with the Good and the Bad here on a daily basis. For example on Tuesday Aug. 23, above: Don Shipman and Megan Koskavich from WKTV brought us a super-sized donation of $1,000 from their recent facebook promotion to help animals shelters. This check will go a long way in providing food, medicine and care for our hundreds of stray, homeless and abused animals. (See the WKTV News report here.) Ten minutes after they left, a dog was brought in by the Animal Control officer in Bridgewater, accompanied by the NY State Police. This 4 year old Pit-mix was cut, her whiskers and coat burned, she was doused with paint and set on fire, her back fur was singed and she was further abused. We named her 'Star' because she has a white star on her back coat. She is very friendly and we're hoping that anyone with information would please contact the Animal Control officer at 822-6921 or the NY State Police. |

He's spending time with our trainer and he's pretty mellow, loves going for rides and walks and we have hope that he will soon go to a loving home. We are still recommending there would be no pets or children in his new home and that he wouldn't be crated throughout the day. If you are interested in meeting Apollo, taking him on our trail for a walk and finding out more about his amazing comeback story, please drop by our shelter and visit with him. Thanks. |

Apollo’s adoption listing The Stevens-Swan Humane Society will start taking applications for the fostering/adoption of Apollo, the dog left out in the freezing cold in Utica back on January 24th. After almost 4 weeks of recovery at the shelter, the staff has decided the time is right to try and find a new home for this 3 year-old male Pitbull mix. Interested persons should have some experience with a special needs dog, that will require attention and compassion. We will also ask that the interested adoptive party have no children or other pets in the house and Apollo shouldn't be crated. Information and applications will be available at the Stevens-Swan Humane Society starting Tuesday February 22nd at 11am. For more information, please call 738-4357. For more on the story of Apollo, please visit : www.Stevens-Swan.org Thank you. |

Here's 'Hope', a friendly pit-mix, who recently came to us severely malnourished, sick and infested with fleas. We have begun a TLC rehab program with her. Eventually, she will be available for fostering with the intent to adopt. First, we're providing her with medical and nutritional care along with the interaction of our staff to socialize her. We're 'hoping' for great things in this dog's future! This is the type of abuse we see here on a regular basis and that we are working with local animal control officers to bring those responsible to justice. |
Two weeks later and 15 pounds heavier, Hope is coming along! |
And here's HOPE (Dec. 18, 2010) as she gets better and stronger every day.! |

Update:
Sentencing in Utica City Court on February 11, 2010. The persons charged in the 'Annie' dog abuse and cruelty case had their sentences announced by Judge Balzano: Both pled guilty.
Gregory Patterson : 3 years probation
Lashanta L. Jackson : 60 hours of community service (conditional discharge)
The following letter was written by Jerry Kraus of the Stevens-Swan Humane Society on February 5th, in advance of the sentencing and was sent to area media outlets.
Animal cruelty cases need swift justice
Our area has seen an increase in animal cruelty cases recently. From a cat dying in Utica from shots fired from a gas powered BB gun to a puppy abused in Little Falls with a power drill, these are just the latest two incidents of shocking behaviors against defenseless animals. At the Stevens-Swan Humane Society of Oneida County, we've also seen recent cases of a cat having it's tail cut off with a box cutter and the near death abuse and neglect of ‘Annie' the young dog who has captured the entire community with her successful fight back to much better health.
It is up to our criminal justice system to now prosecute these unlawful behaviors of cowards. Studies show that the majority of animal abusers move on to child abuse and human assaults. We need to send a clear message that Central New York does not allow this criminal behavior against animals to go unpunished.
If you happen to witness or can confirm animal abuse in your neighborhood, please contact your local animal control officer or your local humane society. All calls can remain anonymous and confidential. Please speak up for those who can't.
Here's 'Annie' at the shelter before her recent visit to WKTV for the Monday Feb. 22 noon Newstalk segment with Jerry. She is doing much better! (scroll down to see her 'before' pictures)
Animal For Animals II: Rich Masucci and Erica Moss stopped by to visit and drop off a beautiful framed photo featuring signatures of people who helped with the second annual music fest and Pub Crawl, this year in memory of Ric 'Animal' Morehouse. A total of $2,350 was presented to the Telethon. 'Ivy' accepted the photo on behalf of the shelter.

Tune in every Monday at Noon for the news on WKTV Newschannel 2 to see Newstalk. Jerry Kraus brings along a shelter pet up for adoption. We have a great success rate after showing off their smiling faces on TV. Here's Don Shipman, Jerry and 'Zoey' during a recent newscast. |
Thank You to the students of Heather Thomas at Bradley Elementary School in New Hartford. They collected food and supplies for our animals for the Holidays. Here's Jerry and 'Mia', an 8-month old Pit mix puppy, meeting the students and thanking them personally.
Here's Annie a 1 to 2 year old female pit mix, rescued (11/18) in the City of Utica. After an anonymous call to the UPD, Animal Control Officer Chris Collver responded and after seeing the neglected condition of the dog, seized her and brought her into the Stevens-Swan Humane Society for Vet treatment, care, housing and evaluation. Besides severe malnutrition and anemia, Annie has an eye infection, flea infestation and other medical ailments. The investigation of this abuse and neglect is ongoing and 2 Utica suspects have been charged with misdemeanor animal abuse and will appear in Utica City Court at 9am on Thursday Feb. 11th for sentencing.
Anyone interested in helping with the cost of helping little Annie, please send your donation to ‘Annie's Fund' c/o The Stevens-Swan Humane Society, 5664 Horatio Street , Utica , NY 13502 . Thank you to everyone who has made a donation to Annie's fund so far. We've collected over
$500$1,500$1,900$2,200$2,500$2,900$3,256 from concerned local citizens for her medical treatments that continue to bring her back to good health. One day at a time.
Here's another update about 'Annie' (Nov 27): After 9 days, she has gained 9 pounds! Here she is modeling her new sweater, to keep her warm. She continues to see the Vet once a week for bloodwork and medical check-ups and treatments. She is getting better every day under the watchful eye of her 'foster' dad. THANK YOU for your donations & concern for our little 'Annie'.
Heeeeerr's Annie !(Dec. 4th) Look at how she is filling out. In just two weeks, she has gained 15 pounds! She still is getting Vet treatments and she is becoming a sweet, loveable happy pet. In just a few weeks, the transformation has been wonderful to witness. Left for almost dead, she has made significant gains under the watchful eye of her foster dad Jim, The Stevens-Swan Humane Society and her Vet team. Thanks to all of you who have lended your support as well! Keep checking back, for updates on our little Annie.
Here's Annie on Dec. 10th. Forget about the 'Biggest Loser', Annie's working on being the 'Biggest Gainer' - by adding 18 pounds in just three weeks! And it looks good on her, doesn't it? Thank you to Jim in Whitesboro (her foster Dad) and everyone involved in Annie's 'comeback'. She is the sweetest girl and appreciates every act of kindness.
Here's 'Annie' on January 14th, less than 2 months after she was brought in near death. She has been fostered into a fun loving, chubby little happy dog. She is very friendly and loves going for walks and rides with her new best friend, Jim from Whitesboro. Look for Annie and our other success stories on our upcoming WKTV Telethon on Thursday January 28th from Noon until 8pm. Please consider calling in a pledge to continue the heart-warming animal turnarounds like what we've seen with 'Annie'.
Just in time for the Holidays! David and Debbie Bolos made it a very special Christmas to remember for their son Timothy when they came in and found Max, the young Golden Retriever. The family and their new best friend are doing great!
It's the worst part of our job here: Dealing with the abuse of the animals that takes place in our community. Here is Sandy, a 4 year old hound mix who just came to us after a stay at a local vet hospital. She is an abuse victim, being recently beaten and stabbed (you can see her stitches in the photo above). Utica Police and our Animal Control officer have made an arrest in this case and there is a Felony charge pending. To see such a sweet dog suffer such serious abuse brings us all back to the harsh realities of the work we need to do here, not just in mending these poor animals but in educating the public as to the abuse that is happening around us and how we all can have a part in reporting it and helping to keep watch over our area's pets and animals. Along with that, we remain steadfast in bringing these criminals to justice for their crimes against helpless animals. We'll be closely following this case in Utica City Court.
If you'd like to help with a donation to cover part of Sandy's ongoing medical bills, please send a check to us c/o The Stevens-Swan Humane Society, 5664 Horatio Street, Utica, NY 13502. Please note that it's for the 'Sandy' fund and we'll make sure she gets a special gentle hug for your kindness.
The Fountainhead Group (New York Mills) recently held their company picnic and Jerry showed up with 'Sammy' to deliver a Thank You plaque for all of their employee donations from recent fundraising events for our animals here at the shelter including the Ice Cream Social, car raffle ticket sales and raffle baskets. They also are putting together a wonderful employee membership/payroll deduction plan as well. Thank you to Jackie and John Romano, Theresa Wilson and everyone at The Fountainhead Group.
Another one of our puppies is going to a 'foster' home. Here's 'Sissy' with Angela and Bob, and now they will take care of her until she is old enough and ready to be adopted. Our foster programs have many benefits for you, us and the animals. If you are interested, please call our office at 738-4357.
We love it when best friends meet here at the Stevens-Swan Humane Society. For example, Alex Acquaviva of Utica and his buddy 'Punchy' met here and within minutes, they hit it off! We know it's going to be a super-fun summer for the two of them!
